Cayman Islands tax 2026: no direct taxes, so no test of tax residence
The Cayman Islands have no direct taxation laws: no income, corporate, capital or other direct taxes on residents. As a result no domestic rule defines tax residence or sets a number of days. Your right to stay comes from immigration law, and your days keep their effect for your former country.
On most pages of this site, the first question is how many days it takes. In the Cayman Islands there is no such number, and the reason is written down. The jurisdiction's sheet published by the OECD says that there are no direct taxation laws in the Cayman Islands, and therefore no domestic provisions which define tax residence generally or which provide criteria for determining it. The Tax Information Authority says it is not a tax administration or revenue agency, precisely because the islands do not have direct taxes. A profile submitted in 2019 to the OECD adds that the territory does not impose income, corporate, capital or other direct taxes. So the search for a Cayman income tax rate ends quickly: nothing is charged on a salary, a pension, dividends or gains by way of direct tax. What matters is everything around that fact, which is the right to live there, the other charges you do pay, and above all what the country you came from thinks about your departure.
What individuals are charged, and what they are not
| Item | What the official texts say |
|---|---|
| Income tax | None: no direct taxes |
| Corporate and capital taxes | None: no direct taxes |
| Property tax | None, according to a 2020 government risk paper |
| Stamp duty on real estate at sale | 6% to 7.5% of the value in that paper, with reduced rates for first-time Caymanian buyers |
The stamp duty figure comes from an Anti-Money Laundering Unit paper updated in March 2020, so check the current rate before a purchase. There is no scale on this page because no scale exists. We read no official statement of VAT or consumption taxes, and we do not state how much living in the islands costs in indirect charges: "no direct tax" is not "no cost". The DITC says that company tax exemption certificates come from the Cabinet Office, and we did not read an equivalent for individuals.
Without a test, residence comes down to your paperwork
| Day threshold | Window | How days count | With no day count |
|---|---|---|---|
| none | no number of days | - | Your stay depends on immigration law, and your days still matter to your former country. |
The absence of a domestic test has a practical consequence. For the Common Reporting Standard, the sheet says that residence is determined under the standard and its commentaries, not under any local rule. Financial institutions in the islands still report, and the DITC's FAQs state that a taxpayer identification number and a date of birth must be reported for individuals who are reportable persons. In other words, opening an account in George Town does not hide your tax status from anyone: the bank will ask where you are tax resident, and the Cayman Islands cannot simply be the answer because you stay there.
The FAQs we read do not describe a tax residence certificate for individuals. If a foreign authority or a bank asks you for one, do not assume it exists. Ask the Department for International Tax Cooperation in writing what it can and cannot issue, and keep the answer. Your former country may be sceptical of a letter that says little more than you live there.
The right to stay: immigration law, not tax law
Living in the islands depends on immigration status, administered by the Director of WORC. The Immigration (Transition) (Amendment and Validation) Act 2025 reworks section 42 on the Certificate of Permanent Residence for Persons of Independent Means. On that text, the certificate lasts ten years. The applicant must have invested in developed real estate in the islands, with the paid-up amount meeting a sum prescribed separately. Within the last year of the ten, the holder may apply for renewal, which can then be indefinite at the discretion of the Board or the Director, and an indefinitely renewed holder may later apply for British naturalisation or registration under the 1981 Act after at least one more year.
We give no sum here on purpose. This Act leaves it to a prescribed amount, and the residency page of the government's investment agency did not open for us. That amount has to be read in the regulations in force on the day you apply. The other routes, such as direct investment and substantial business presence certificates, are also touched by the 2025 Act; we did not go through them in detail.
The country you left decides most of the question
A move to a place with no direct tax does not cancel the tax laws of the place you left, and for many readers this is the entire issue. The islands will not give you a residence test to set against your former country's.
United Kingdom. The Statutory Residence Test keeps counting your UK midnights and ties after you leave. The 2010 UK and Cayman Islands Double Taxation Arrangement exists, and GOV.UK says it entered into force on 20 December 2010, with effect from 6 April 2011 for income tax and capital gains tax. The 2019 profile says there are no comprehensive double tax agreements, but ten limited ones. Read the actual text before relying on it.
United States. The substantial presence test applies to days in the US, and a green card makes you resident with no day count. Moving to the islands changes neither.
France. The domestic criteria in article 4 B of the French tax code look at home, work and economic interests, wherever else you live. See leaving France for what the French side expects.
If you spend little time anywhere and cannot show tax residence in any country, you may also find that banks and former authorities treat you as a problem, not as a free person. That situation is covered under digital nomad tax residency, and it deserves as much thought as the absence of tax.
Keeping proof where no authority asks for it
The odd part of living in a place with no test is that nobody local requires a count. Yet your count is often the most useful record you own. Should HMRC or another authority ask, in several years' time, where you were on given dates, your answer will come from passport stamps, boarding passes, leases and bills. Keep them from the first day. Compare the position with Monaco, which also reads no day count, or the UAE, which does have a certificate, and look at the country table for the rest. The Taxlag app keeps the dates across every country you pass through, which is the record your former country is likely to ask for.
Questions people ask
Is there income tax in the Cayman Islands?
No. The jurisdiction’s sheet published by the OECD says there are no direct taxation laws in the Cayman Islands. A 2019 profile supplied to the OECD says the territory does not impose income, corporate, capital or other direct taxes, and the Tax Information Authority says it is not a revenue agency for that reason. Other charges, such as stamp duty on property, do exist.
How many days do I need to be tax resident in the Cayman Islands?
None is set, because no domestic rule defines tax residence. The sheet published by the OECD says so outright: with no direct taxation laws, there are no provisions providing criteria for determining residence. Your right to stay comes from immigration law instead. Your days still count under the tests of other countries, so keep a record of them.
Can I get a tax residence certificate from the Cayman Islands as an individual?
The official FAQs we read do not describe one. They mention company tax exemption certificates, which come from the Cabinet Office and not from the Department for International Tax Cooperation. If a bank or a foreign authority asks you for proof, ask the department in writing what it can issue, as we cannot confirm that such a document exists for individuals.
Does moving to Cayman end my UK tax residence?
Not by itself. The UK Statutory Residence Test looks at your UK days and ties, and the Cayman Islands provide no residence test to set against it. GOV.UK publishes a 2010 Double Taxation Arrangement between the two, in force since 20 December 2010. Check your position under the UK test first, as leaving the UK and arriving in Cayman are two separate questions.
